In Prevention

The mission of the Breast Cancer Education Association (BCEA) is to educate the community by providing support and information about detection, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. BCEA is committed to individuals, survivors, families and communities by offering a broad range of cutting-edge information about breast health. In the African American community, BCEA is a partner in Sisters Standing up to Breast Cancer – a project that brings mobile mammography to the churches.

To expand reach of the project and deliver education and information that is culturally tailored and provided by community peers, BCEA recruited its’ first BCEA Community Champions. In September, thirteen Community Champions came together including cancer survivors, health professionals, Community Health Workers (CHWs), congregants from participating churches and one brave man to learn about breast cancer, the Sisters Standing up to Breast Cancer project, how to communicate your prevention message, and resources for the community; American Cancer Society, the Sage Screening Program and BCEA.

The Community Champions are engaged and ready to reach out to their community to be a source of knowledge and support and to promote the church based mobile mammography events.

Planning is underway to recruit and train a second cohort in spring, 2019.
