The #MNBLUE Colon Cancer Strategy Action Group has been working to increase colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, Objective 2 of Cancer Plan MN 2025, through a high profile campaign held in March. They worked hard to get more partners involved by reaching out to community health centers, non-metro health groups and Chambers of Commerce. In March 2018, 71 landmarks across Minnesota were lit up in blue to raise visibility of CRC. This was up from less than 30 sites in 2017.
In addition to the #MNBLUE events, this group created and gave out new CRC awareness materials to healthcare providers. Throughout March, 4,004 brochures, 2,906 postcards, 2,302 “Ask Me Why I’m Blue” stickers and 880 “Ask Me Why I’m Blue” buttons were distributed. Partners used the hashtag #MNBLUE to promote the events on social media. Media reporting occurred all over the state urging people to be screened for CRC. Additionally, a Twitter Chat focusing on CRC in adults under the age of 50 was held.
One major in-person event was sponsored as well. The Building Blue Bridges Reception was held in Saint Paul on March 26th. During this event, nearly 200 people celebrated CRC prevention and screening efforts. The American Cancer Society, MDH, and the Colon Cancer Coalition awarded the local CRC Champion of the Year, Organization of the Year, and Innovators in CRC Screening. New and interested partners are welcome to join MCA Colon Cancer Network meetings and attend group activities; such as the Get Your Rear in Gear run/walk and Tour de Tush bike ride in September. Current partners of this group include the MCA CRC Network, the Colon Cancer Coalition, the American Cancer Society, Minnesota Gastroenterology, and MDH SAGE Scopes Program.
