Knowledge about health equity is not the same as knowledge about how to communicate about health equity. And communication is the mightiest tool in a Research Advocate’s toolkit.
Like in all workforces, when the field is not diverse, communication that addresses issues that matter to diverse audiences are more likely to be overlooked. There is an equity gap in the representation of advocates of color. And the lack of diversity of advocates is contributing to the lack of patient-centered communication about health equity.
So, what can we do about this? It is critical that we listen to and learn from those who work in health equity spaces so that we can create inclusive patient-centered communication practices that reach and represent all voices.
