Hennepin County Medical Center

Richard Zera, MD, PhD, is division chief of Surgical Oncology at Hennepin County Medical Center and State Chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for Minnesota. A surgeon in his 28th year of practice, Dr. Zera has helped educate hundreds of University of Minnesota medical students and HCMC residents in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Family Practice. During those 26 years, he has worked closely with Hennepin County colleagues to meet Commission on Cancer standards for certified cancer programs.  Elected CoC State Chair in 2013, he was instrumental in creating the MN Commission on Cancer Network, which brings together representatives of Minnesota’s CoC-accredited institutions, the Alliance and the American Cancer Society. The network’s purpose is to facilitate achievement of shared objectives around quality cancer care. He has been actively involved in the recent “80 by 18” campaign to increase colon cancer screening rates in the state, and he has promoted development of new CoC standards for comprehensive treatment summary documents and palliative care. One of the core group who crafted the state’s first cancer plan, Zera says he hopes to bring the resources and perspective of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer to the development of the next Cancer Plan Minnesota.
